Avon Products, Inc., is one of the oldest direct selling companies in America. It traces its origins to 1886, when David H. McConnell (1856-1937) bought the Union Publishing Company of New York City and started manufacturing perfumes to give away with his books. Irmgard Altenbach, known professionally as Irma Alten, was born on December 21, 1911. She worked for Avon Products, Inc., from 1928 to 1968. In the 1930s, she was a Sales Dept. manager at the company's headquarters in New York City. The Sales Dept. office was transferred to Rye, N.Y., in 1960, and Altenbach worked there until her retirement in 1968. She died in New York on September 1, 2004.
